200,000 to miss out on University?

According to Graeme Paton and Andrew Hough from the Telegraph, more than 200,000 students face missing out on degree courses and huge budget cuts force universities to freeze places, vice chancellors have warned. One university leader warned that institutions were being forced to prioritise foreign students over those from the UK because they can be charged as much as £30,000 a year. It also emerged that almost seven people are competing for each place at elite universities – prompting claims that more students with straight A’s will be rejected.

The comments came as the Government’s Higher Education Funding Council for England announced university budgets would be cut by £449 million in 2010/11. This includes a 1.6 per cent reduction – £215 million – in teaching funding and a 17 per cent cut in cash for facilities. Research budgets will remain the same as last year. The majority of universities are being forced to freeze or cut places this year. It comes despite the fact that the number of applications for degree courses is up by an estimated 12 per cent compared with 2009. Prof Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, which represents vice-chancellors, suggested more than 200,000 students could miss out as a result of the squeeze.

“Last year about 160,000 students who applied didn’t end up going to university,” he said. “This year, we already know that there are about another 75,000 applying for university. So the number of students who go to university will be less than the number that actually want to go and thus there will be a lot of students this year who do not get a place.” Graeme Paton and Andrew Hough, Telegraph.

More than 1/3 of UK graduates on the dole

More than a third of recent graduates are still lining up in the dole queue, new figures show. Only six percent found a graduate entry job while 36 percent claimed job seekers allowance – half of them longer than six months. ‘Having invested heavily in securing a decent degree, it is not unreasonable for graduates to feel they deserve a job that matches their career expectations,’ said Mike Fetters, of totaljobs.com, which carried out the research. ‘But competition for professional roles has never been fiercer – and students who have failed to prepare through extra-curriculum activities and early engagement with employers are simply not making the grade.’

Only half of those questioned had made full use of their university careers advisory service – with 60 percent of those saying it had failed them. Meanwhile, demand for new staff dipped in March, Reversing a slow rise in vacancies since the start of 2010, separate figures from Reed recruitment agency showed. ‘While new jobs are still at a higher level than last year, employers have become more cautious about committing to new recruitment,’ said managing director Martin Warnes. – Joel Taylor, Metro.
